How do you make those nude portrait photos have the extreme black and white difference?

I use gimp and I would like to do the shading and shadowing like that. Not just lowering the brightness and contrast but actually manipulation
i know its lighting. I am strictly talking about photo editing software enhancements
Until about five years ago, all that was done with creative lighting and precision exposures in the camera.
To get really amazing (low key) photos, using the camera and lighting is still the best way.
Using a photo manipulation program can produce high contrast images like that, but the highlights tend to washout and lose detail and the shadow areas block up and again, lose detail.
