Caucasian Mountain Dog: dog with the uncanny resemblance to the bear

The Caucasian Mountain Dog also known as the Caucasian Ovtcharka is an ancient breed that for centuries was little known outside the remote regions of that coming, that is, incorporating the Caucasus: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Iran and Turkey. The Caucasus mountain dog or Ovtcharka (Russian Ovtcharka means shepherd or sheepdog) is a member of the working group of the breed of dog and despite his name sheepdog / shepherd this dog was never a cowherd, but rather a guardian or protector that goes a long way in explaining his not inconsiderable size! The Caucasus mountain dog was bred to protect livestock from wolves, bears and other predators, and indeed the Caucasian Ovtcharka is a strange resemblance to a bear!

Until recently considered by many to be a descendant of the Tibetan Mastiff, updated archeological evidence suggests that their ancestors came of ancient dogs that lived in the wooded hills of Iraq and Mesopotamia. It is believed that the types of dog that a variety of nomadic tribes who settled together in the regions Caucasus, with little intervention and interference from outside influences, eventually became the Caucasian mountain dog.

Until the decade 1930, the Caucasian Ovtcharka was little known outside its home range, until it began to appear in European dog shows in Germany. Around 1952, the dog Caucasus mountain is subdivided into two distinct races: the Transcaucasian Ovtcharka usually the heavier bones, big dog that comes from mountainous regions and the Caucasian Ovtcharka, less bulky type that originates in the steppe regions.

In 1976, the two sub-breeds were consolidated and reclassified as a race, and these days, the Caucasian Mountain Dog is expected to conform to a single standard. Whatever though, the various sub-breeds can still be regionally differentiated the various territories of the former Soviet Union and now one of the most coveted Mountain Dog Caucasian type is called sub-race of Georgia are characterized by thick-coated, heavy-boned, massive dog that most resembles a bear.

The potential of mountain dogs Caucasus, as much more than a Livestock Guardian Dog (LGD) quickly realized by the now defunct Soviet Union army and soon this race dog was used in both peace and wartime and military auxiliary "staff" within the extent of the Soviet Union. In late 1960, Pastor Caucasian was widely introduced to East Germany in particular for the border patrol service, both mostly to patrol the infamous Berlin Wall. When the Berlin Wall was overthrown in 1989, then at least 7000-strong unit of the Caucasus mountain dogs used to patrol the perimeter of the wall was dissolved and many of the dogs found new homes in newly emancipated civilians!

Temperament

This breed of dog has been developed to protect the flocks and herds and therefore has a strong inherent / feature guardian. Both as a family dog Border Collies tend to herd family as a substitute for a flock of sheep, the Caucasian Mountain dog will tend to be somewhat protective of his immediate family, a feature which has obvious benefits, but perhaps less obvious consequences. The Caucasian Ovcharka is a force of will (some might say stubborn) breed of dog that requires hand stronger for proper socialization and training. The so-called stubborn nature of this type of dog is not surprising when you consider that has been bred for hundreds of years by these exact qualities.

This dog was bred in large part to the independent existence of human beings (except for his pastor), and was raised to coexist with cattle which was standing, so Caucasus mountain dog breed is inherently wary of strangers be they people or animals. As expected, the Ovtcharka Caucasus is the most active at night (livestock predators tend to hunt under cover of night) and although it may give the impression that it is a big lazy dog dozing, at the slightest hint of intruders, the Caucasus mountain dog agility reach your feet, the alarm (barking) and immediately to deal with the threat!

The Caucasian Shepherd takes the protection of its territory (in these days believe that the patio of the family) very seriously and will consider any intrusion a stranger as a threat. Despite their enormous size of this dog is characterized by the use of minimum force to deter any threat. Such a force likely minimum can take the form of confronting predators and growling and barking aggressively, it is usually enough to change the minds of most outsiders, because much like their wild counterparts dog, this dog breed still retains the old mindset that natural (or deadly) force should be a last resort, as it tends be counterproductive (ie, injury to either party).

Any good with children?

As noted This breed of dog tends to replace his immediate family to cattle were selectively bred to protect, in other words, this dog is highly protective of their family members. Therefore it is important to understand that this dog could feel naughty or rough play of children between one family member and a friend (as is the trend with kids) as a threat and protect your wiring-the-herd genetics immediately starts in!

Therefore, it is vitally essential to properly socialize this breed dog and explain to their children only because they know that "Shaggy" would never hurt, they must understand that they can not go to your friends unless the dog knows (ie, accepted as an extension of his flock). Obviously, with a dog of this size all the activity around children children should be supervised, because even the family pet does not intend to harm, is a large dog that during the heat of the game can easily forget their formidable size and strength and could accidentally hurt a child!

The issue of housing accommodation?

In general, Caucasian Mountain Dog does not make the ideal home dweller. Although most of the big dogs as their energy level is somewhat low this breed of dog is inherently night and was raised to alert and warn of and intruders. In other words, his love for his Caucasian mountain dog, and could lead to hate of its neighbors because of their Caucasian Ovcharka is going crazy with his racket at night (barking … which is especially true if your neighbors are creatures of animals Aka Party night).

Interactivity with other dogs

From a genetic standpoint, the Caucasus mountain dog was never bred to be too friendly with other dogs whether dogs or wolves, because, like a flock guardian would be expected to remove all potential predators, Naturally, we have included wild dogs. However, as the socialization with most any breed of dog with timely and relevant usually outweighs any hostility towards other dogs or animals in this race!

Caucasian Mountain Dog Breed Standard

At present there seems to breed standards conflict that could be partly explained by the different sub-races and the late acceptance of the breed in the AKC, from now on this breed of dog has AKC range. Only recently has officially moved the AKC recognize this breed of dog (May 2007), although the Caucasian Ovcharka has been registered with the FSS (Foundation Stock Services) since 1996. Since January 2008, the Caucasian Mountain Dog be allowed to formally compete in AKC Companion Events.
