How do you become a Pack leader?
So I am raising a high prey drive puppy. I am the one that mostly feeds him and washes him. I take him out to go potty and the one sharing my room with him. How do I know if I am the pack leader? He sometimes growl at me when pick him up, even snaps at me when I pet him sometimes but most of the time he doesn’t. I understand he is still teething but he dont nibble he bites kinda hard. He is about 3 months old and is a Korean Jindo.

Hi love, you are definitely in the position to be your dogs pack leader…but you need to take a bit more control than what you have now before you get an aggressive dogs on your hands. This can be stopped quickly and easily if you are consistent and do not unleash anger when disciplining. Remember you’re not only the boss…you’re the example. If you lose self control which or get anxious…it bleeds over into how your dog will act and respond to you. Pups that are young will test their limits by growling or nipping you. It is how they designate order in the pack so in saying that…it is okay when you are playing tug of war with a toy that they growl…if he growls or snaps when you go to pick him up ask yourself this. Do you say “up” before you pick him up so that he knows something is about to happen. Or is he a bit startled? If he see’s you coming and knows it’s going to happen and growls or nips snap your finger, scoop him up, tap his nose with your first finger and say sternly “no bite…no,no,no” Do not yell it just say it stern. If he gets aggressive…take him by the back of the neck (it is where the extra skin is that his mom carried him around with. Pull the skin up (not to cause pain but to get his attention) and again tap his nose and say the “no,no thing”. Do not ever let him get away with snapping or growling at you if he is doing it out of anger…again when you are playing with a rope toy or something else he may miss and snap you instead of the toy (all dogs do this off and on). You can remind him “no bite, no,no,no”. When he settles go ahead play again.
I want to tell you that asking questions when you puppy is young is a very wise and responsible thing to do. I wish you a long and very happy life with your puppy.
