Single-frame patterns of dots – identification in movie theaters?
I recently watched Avatar in a movie theater, and throughout the film I noticed 2 or more big looking oval dots which appeared for a very short time. I go to theaters very rarely, so this was new to me. At first I thought it’s some kind of bug in the film, but then I was like, in the digital era? Nah.
Later I heard that these patterns of dots serve a purpose of identifying movie theaters where CAM-rips could have been made. It makes sense if you consider some 3rd world country cinema might be corrupt and allow cam-rips for a pay. Is this true or is it something else?

I think it is to tell the projectionist to change reels. At least that’s what Edward Norton and Brad Pitt said in “Fight Club”
