What is this sewing machine accessory?

I recieved a sewing machine from a realative and this came with it… I have no idea what it is. Can anyone tell me what it’s for and how it works? Thanks!

Looks like a button hole foot. you use the opening that is adjustable to help you keep your button holes the same size.

You don’t have to use this to make button holes – it’s just a guide to help make them all the same size without measuring each time. If you have a machine that is newer (and probably digital) and does button holes automatically this foot is less neccessary.

If you have an older model, or a basic model, then this foot helps out.

The red marks are to help you measure.
