One has only to talk with Clair Halliday matter of minutes before realizing that power has been found in a pint-sized package. She is not afraid of what some may consider uncomfortable questions, while delving into rumors and innuendo straight. She will ensure that the perception of it goes out with her is that which presents itself. In summary, Clair is a young woman senseless with a drive and determination that is usually drawn to characterize the boys in a playground asphalt, not a 5'4, 105 lbs woman attractive. If ever there was a person who had that "do" spirit is Clair Halliday.
Make no mistake about it, Clair is all woman as she talks about her wedding, her husband, sewing, fashion design, home facial treatments, kitchen, plans for a family, and a new home as smoothly as she speaks adventure sports, the relegation zone, his motorcycle SV 650 S and kicking ass in general. Clair is the second oldest in a family of 9 siblings, she understands what it takes to excel in a crowd and hold her own against all challenges. The children were in the house of Nicholas school, with classes starting Clair community University at 14, before graduating from high school at age 16. After graduating early filling gaps introduced countless hours of their days, so he started rock climbing to occupy part of his time, his attention was soon transferred to BASE jumping. He later worked as a packer in a drop zone and start your skydiving. Faced a roadblock on the road a few because of their desire for independence at a young age, can not sign a lease a place to live closer to work or open a checking account, were just two of the obstacles. Clair, were found to want the responsibilities of adulthood, but decelerated in their quest to "rules and regulations."
Its sole objective of BASE jumping, which claimed "there are no rules or regulations," became a reality at the age of 16, he contacted BASE jumper, Jimmy Halliday and then had "the talk" with her mom. "I told her and she responded, "No you're not," he said then "I would lose on the opportunity of a lifetime" and she accepted. Clair and his boyfriend Chris, forced to comply with Jimmy Halliday in August 2005, met for an hour and a half with Jimmy before the date of the jump. On the day of diving, Jimmy conferences Clair on how the jump would go as he packed his parachute. He made a few demos of what should be similar to the door and then headed to a local antenna. Chris, Jimmy's girlfriend at the time of Melissa and some others of the relegation zone in Lodi were attending their first jump. The antenna was 480 and he felt "it did not seem that was high enough, "Jimmy ran through the instructions to go one last time. He left hand with an open field for it to land, jokes again to tell the story of the few obstacles that were present that day, ie, cows, cows that fear like Hank Caylor fears monkey.
A year Later, after Jimmy had thrown objects Clair a, both are free from prior relationships and Clair decided that there was no one who prefers older, Jimmy met a woman who shared his passions and dreams. The couple degraded personal adversities along with criticism from outsiders who judges, often throwing stones over the Internet without ever having seen the couple. Together, approaching 3 years of marriage and business partnership to open its own drop zone in the north California, traveled the world and has now set its sights on buying a house and raise a family. Clair did not want to be less than the transcript of her husband, returned to college and is studying for his degree in Chemistry and Fashion Design. Its aim is to continue its level of Pharmacists and license, which he exclaims: "is a lot of schooling." I say it I feel if something you really want to achieve, you can do. His answer: "Sure will."
1. Tell me how you went to find a teacher to learn BASE jumping.
I contacted a few different people throughout my trip to start BASE jumping. Some tips offered, as learn to skydive first, others never responded to my question, and others told me that was stupid and will die before she was old enough to drink alcohol. I met one of the videos of Jimmy and his email address is on the back of the package. We spoken many times before he has pledged to take me BASE jumping. He said from the beginning he wanted to meet me first and it became very clear that if there is any sign did not like, and my opportunity to learn from him was over and done with immediate effect. I liked his attitude toward teaching and commitment, along with his style teaching suited me. When Jimmy told me that I would go if he did not think could handle the responsibility, gave me confidence that not only could I do, but I've found the right person to teach me. I also felt that I was teaching for the right reasons because I was a talented athlete. Not because I wanted mark with an attractive young woman.
2. What was running through his mind in his first base jump?
There was a natural quantity of nervousness, but I never was afraid. I was standing on the edge of the holding on a handrail and not once thought that I would not do it, but still the day for time noting the time. I remember trying to count a few times for me to go ahead and jump, my heart was pounding and when I did the countdown 3,2,1 my heart jump. I remember laughing and thinking "Oh my God, almost a leap." Once I did jump was encouraged and excited. When I landed and type next time it landed behind me, all I could say was, "I have to do it again."
3. When someone contacts with you personally and asked about being taught to BASE jump, what advice would you offer?
I receive emails every day of a wide variety of people of all age ranges. All this I offer the same advice, it is to learn to skydive first and get some experience canopy under his belt. If you still feel that BASE jumping is for them, then continue on to the next step. I generally get a negative response from response of these people, because it occurred to me that would be taught that when I entered the sport with no experience in skydiving.
4. Has been arrested in a break? If so, how to handle it?
I was arrested again just after turning 18 years old. When I look back, I am surprised how calm and collected at the time was that was happening. I was a little disappointed that the police took my computer, but all out in the end. The police never presented the note to invade the "load" evasion of a peace officer, "I received my one-year standard later, when the statue of limitations ran out. I now avoid jumps that have high bust factors as I feel I have a reputation as a business owner, I been in school and really do not prefer to be "that bridge" on the news.
5. What does your training when that was proposed to learn the "how" of BASE jumping?
As I said earlier I have not had much training for my first jump. It was a progression as are all learning situations. My first jump I was taught how to open the parachute and what to expect when he jumped from the object. They told me how to jump, throw my pilot chute and once opened the way to unstow my breaks and turn the land. I was super happy that Jimmy did not overwhelm me with a lot of information that only I am confused. Over my next jump, Jimmy taught me more each time adding to my knowledge.
6. How soon after BASE jumping that has begun to start your skydiving?
BASE jumping began on August 05 and had a total of 8 BASE jumps before I became my first tandem skydiving in mid-September. I made a second tandem in late September. At the time I took the course from static line was the end of October and I had already registered 15 BASE jumps.
7. How do you respond to the bridges that say you should have never been taught to BASE jump before learning skydiving?
In a sense I know what people thought when they heard what he was doing, but at the same time very few people knew exactly what was going on and how much thought was put into my first few jumps. Most people assumed that I had no idea, reckless and felt the same about Jimmy for teaching me. Everything was carefully planned and designed for both. I did not want to get hurt and nobody would get into trouble. Learned to BASE jump in perfect condition with wide open landing areas, where I had the least amount of risk to do my dives safely and successfully.
8. How to respond to criticism that they were too young to be "hanging out" with the husband of her now, bridge partners? Or the thought process that women should not be taught by male colleagues, where there is a relationship?
I think most people are talking about jealousy or, because nobody had the courage to teach me, however, once Jimmy took me under his wing, people began to lash out at us to make gross assumptions. After reaching 18 years of age, no one said a word about us is "stupid about it" and suddenly people were expressing their support for us and they were a married couple. When I contacted Jimmy and during the two years I was teaching BASE jumping, we were not in a relationship, at least not one with others. I have trusted Jimmy to teach me or my bag or parachute jumps my plan if he felt he was not committed to my safety and success. I do not believe that friends Jimmy and his companion bridge would have agreed to go with me if you do not believe in me like Jimmy did.
9. As you know, a thread in a forum posted BASE jumping his name in play as you have been taught to BASE jump before skydiving. You told me in our initial conversation that "the Internet offers people a false confidence because they have to show their faces. "Given the opportunity to respond here and now, what do you mean?
People are very critical and harsh in their views when it comes to how I learned to BASE jumping. The Internet is giving people false confidence. They can say what they want and be protected by their user names in the thread. I've said from the beginning, and now I've met a lot of people bad mouth me on the forums about how I learned.
"Not one of them said a word to my face than I thought."
It seems outrageous that these people have very strong opinions and had no problem enforcing them on the internet, but when faced with the person who acted like he never said a word. He continues to act as if I had maintained all along as I was learning to BASE jumping. Almost all base jumpers or paratrooper I met had read what people think of us. If people make assumptions about us before meeting with us, then it is not worth knowing.
The talk in the forums shows people how little they really know me personally or Jimmy or our situation. I use to get angry when people seemed to think that the reason is that we're together, "because I am a silly girl in love with the guy who taught me to Jimmy is jumping and dirty old man who is taking advantage of my situation. "I think the fact that they all went at once to assume it was on sex, shows what's on your mind and where morality lies, not ours. Such accusations talk more about making them, then who is to or about. People can think what they want, Jimmy and I know the truth. We are happy together accomplishing our individual goals and dreams of the family.
10. What has been the reaction of your family to your search to BASE jumping and skydiving?
His initial reaction was that I was crazy and reckless, but when they had educated in both sports recognized risk assessment and careful planning of each step involved. Now they support me, and indeed have gone to see me jump. Although I have nothing to do now are surprised. Each of my brothers have very different sports interests ranging from none at all, snow sports and skateboarding. Since I I have spoken to sky diving to some of them to try. My older brother Harrison and one of my younger sisters have jumped Madelyn now, and my mom. All of them had a great moment, but it is not skydiving or BASE jumping is one of the main options for the sport to follow. They simply can not share my love for bypass edge.
11. What activities do you enjoy outside of sports?
I'm very involved in activities that can not be classified as a sport, such as sewing and painting favorites. I've been making clothes for awhile now and love it. Painting is something I find very relaxing and it relaxes me. I also like riding motorcycles. I have a SV 650 S which is my baby. I am also a student at the university. There are days in which to relax and do my own spa at home with mud masks I do or I like to read a book while swinging in my hammock or take a nap.
12. You wear many different hats these days, "wife", "Base Jumper", "AFF Instructor," "Cameraman", "Student", "Drop Zone Owner. "How do you maintain balance in your life?
It is difficult to juggle my work with my game. In fact, reduces to be responsible, to some extent with my business and get what you need to do first and then play. Of course much of my work is fun too, but the weather office and paperwork is not fun at all. I always try to take some time for me to stay calm and keep cool, so I can perform at my best in all parties of my life.
13. Do you still so active after adding "mother" to their titles?
Jimmy and I have been talking about having children for a while now and definitely want to start adding to our family. Now I will have 9 children and in my family who is a bit too big for us, but we want more than one child.
I see myself continuing with the base and parachuting after children come into our lives. I think I will tone it a bit and not take to the levels I do now. I will be more likely to be more thoughtful about the conditions under which I miss.
14. Has been some time in your life you certainly achieved your goals? In achieving its objectives that you consider yourself a role model for girls?
There was never a moment when I thought I could not achieve my goals. I have had moments when he was much more difficult then originally planned. I've learned over time is that when I have one goal in mind, no matter how fast to play, but I am constantly taking steps in that direction.
I consider myself be a model for young women. I think what I accomplished during a time not so easy in my life is a great success. Now I have a very valuable perspective on what it takes to succeed at a very young age that I can share.
15. Name one woman you most admire and why to do it.
My grandmother. She was an inspiration to me as a woman, when I was growing up and continues to this day it is. He spent most of his childhood in an orphanage after that his mother gave him because she could care for her. She was very independent from an early age and knew what he wanted from life and worked very hard at it. She always told me that I can achieve anything they wanted with a lot of hard work and passion. She married my grandfather at the age of 25 years and have been together for nearly 60 years.
Bonus Questions:
1. What that quote sums Clair Halliday is like a person today?
"What women do, that men have to do twice as well as to be considered half as good, luckily it is not difficult." ~ Charlotte Witton
2. What is the motivation for the tattoo on the back of your head?
The tattoo says HIDGAF which means honestly I Do not Give AF * ck. The saying was released around the relegation zone with a lot of friends. When I decided I wanted a tattoo was the drop zone and had short hair dyed the craziest hair neon red pink by accident, since it assumed was a dark black / purple. I wanted rid of it and not go back to the store to dye it. Jimmy was standing next to me and told me that would be awesome if you let her shave her head. I told him to leave and, of course, is super excited. Once shaved, I told him I thought it would be great if I have the tattoo on my head, because I did not know what often in fact I shave it.
To be honest, I do not remember exactly when I decided that tattooing specific as it only occurred to her that night in the tattoo shop.
3. Do you have an exercise regimen?
I am fairly active person with my daily life and work. I've never had a real workout. I like riding my road bike when the weather permits, or walk my two pit bulls when they are lazy and just want to sleep. I do not drink alcohol, try to maintain a healthy diet and take time each day to relax. I'm going to give me a spa day at home where I do the same for all the products ingredients natural.
Jimmy Halliday's Question: What do you see in Clair has agreed to teach and then continue to jump with her?
Clair and I debate over some e-mails before they ever met. Through e-mails that I was very impressed. She was able to convince me that, although only 16 years old, understands the risks involved in the sport and was prepared to accept the risks in achieving its objectives.
Remember asking him about his athletic background: what qualified in its history to learn to BASE jump like a young age?
She said, "The Last winter finally landed a back flip on my snowboard after landing rare in my neck a dozen times. "
Keep in mind, jumpers very few are based athletics to land a backflip on a snowboard.
So according to his encounter with the caveat that if I felt insecure about his ability, I would not take place in the jump page. In other words, I made no promises.
When we met, she looked me in the eyes, shook my hand with confidence, and introduced himself. At that moment, I knew I could do it. And, obviously, I was right.
My decision to help realize their dreams Clair resulted in a very public debate online about my motivations. I never cared what they say. I am competent to teach jump BASE and Clair was a more competent students. Clair is an incredible athlete and as she was willing to accept the risks involved in sports, I was willing to accept the risks involved in teaching it. Together with our determination and willingness to take risks, I think we made our mark on current developments the sport of BASE jumping.
